I'm supposed to climb Mt. Shasta this weekend with my buddy Owen, but the weather is looking iffy.

I was there last year with the Hiking Club at my son's middle school. The group climbed the whole mountain from the base in Shasta City, walking to the Bunny Flat trailhead and then climbing the peak.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to make a summit attempt. My son was the youngest kid on the trip and I had promised him that he could decide at the Helen Lake base camp whether or not he wanted to try for the summit. He decided to stay at base camp and I stuck with my promise to him. (It was still a great trip!)

In any case, the plan is that I'll get my shot at the peak this coming Monday. We'll drive to Shasta on Saturday; climb to 10,400 Helen Lake base camp on Sunday; attempt the summit on Monday; drive home on Tuesday.

However... the strange California spring weather continues. Today's avalanche report from Shasta calls for "considerable" danger on our route due to last weekend's two and a half feet of snow, and now the weather forecast is for another storm to come in on Saturday and/or Sunday.

I'm crazy, but not crazy enough to climb into a storm on Shasta.
