So, one might ask, how do I find the time to do all of these activities?
No, I'm not independently wealthy! On the contrary, I'm a community college teacher. I'm finishing up a sabbatical leave this spring which gives me some free time to do these things.

Next on the agenda after Shasta is a three-week bicycle trek through Alaska with two of my kids and a school biking club. More details later...

I wrote about my planned Mt. Shasta climb a few days ago. Last Friday we decided not to go based on iffy avalanche condition reports and questionable weather forecasts.
It turns out that we made the right decision according to the Mt.Shasta conditions report I read today. The story is that very few people made it to the top due to whiteout conditions and extreme winds, particularly above the Red Bank.
I'm hopeful that we can reschedule and try again in a week or two when the conditions have had a chance to settle out.

I got my new digital camera yesterday; the Olympus D-40. I got a a 20%-off sale price plus an additional discount for an open-box unit. I had a chance to use it a bit today and I like it, although it is going to take a while to get used to its menu-driven interface.
I really look forward to using it for backpacking. This is a very small and very light camera!
