Supplements Popular Despite Scientific Evidence:
Despite scientific evidence that Echinacea, Vitamin E and other dietary supplements don't live up to the claims once made about them, people still use them. Doctors and psychologists say that may be due to marketing spin, mixed messages from inconclusive studies -- and people's inability to evaluate evidence.

Wild Bill Hickok murdered: 2 August 1876 - This Day in History:

On this day, Wild Bill Hickok, born James Butler Hickok, a frontiersman, marksman, gambler, and legend of the American West, was murdered in the city of Deadwood, in what is now South Dakota. He was visiting the goldfields of the Black Hills. There, at a poker table in the Number Ten saloon, a drunken stranger named Jack McCall shot and killed Wild Bill. McCall's motive was never learned; he was tried, convicted of murder, and hanged on March 1, 1877.

A great reference:

James Randi has put his Encyclopedia of Claims, Frauds, and Hoaxes of the Occult and Supernatural online for all to enjoy. I do wish it were done a bit better instead of big HTML files, but it's still fun, as in this entry about a well-known fraud.

Bush endorses Intelligent Design creationism

Sigh. It just gets worse and worse. Of course he endorses Intelligent Design. By teaching a generation of kids to ignore reality in favor of faith-based "science" that is not science, he helps to ensure hegemony. A stupid citizenry that only believes what it is force fed from the government and the pulpit is what these guys are after.

Happy Birhday to Garth Hudson, mad narcoleptic keyboard player for the Band, who has given me some of my favorite moments in music, mostly on The Basement Tapes. His playing behind Bob on Sign on the Cross is little short of miraculous. He rescues what there is to be rescued of Before the Flood. He's the only member of The Band I've ever meant, was a nice, entertaining guy with me. Long may he bob and weave.

Al Aronowitz, "rock journalist" who put Bob Dylan together with the Beatles is dead. Check out ford_prefectt's collection of posts on Dylan Pool to read some choice Al and some choice Bob.
