Judge orders Feds to release names of 9-11 secret detainees [Politech]
Sadly, this doesn't mean the names will actually be released. Sure, that would be illegal, but then "disappearing" people is illegal too. Somehow I doubt that a government which has shown itself to be completely lawless will suddenly decide to do what a judge tells them.

Afghans Protest U.S. Operation [AP World News]
Hundreds of people marched on a provincial center Saturday to protest what they said was a U.S. helicopter attack that killed one Afghan and the U.S. military's detention of five others from the same village, local officials reported.
The U.S. command in Afghanistan has denied the helicopter attack took place, but has said five men were detained around that time in that area, about 75 miles south of Kabul.
About 500 people traveled 20 miles from the Zormat district of Paktia province to the provincial capital, Gardez, to protest outside the governor's building, said Abdul Matin Husainkhil, commander of Afghan forces in Zormat.
Those people went to a lot of trouble to peacefully protest. If we keep treating Afghanistan like a conquered puppet state, that won't last.

Taiwan Chief Discusses Independence [AP World News]
Good for President Chen! Taiwan and the People's Republic of China are clearly two separate countries. That's just the way it is, and the desire of various people to change the situation in one way or another doesn't alter reality. It's natural for the Communists to claim Taiwan as a "province," because they will use that excuse when they're finally ready to invade. However, for anyone else--Taiwanese, American, or European--to pretend that Taiwan is not an independent country is simply ridiculous.
President Chen's opponents claim that his statements are "reckless" and "provocative" because they might prompt China to attempt the conquest of Taiwan. I say those opponents are living in a fantasy world. The leaders of the People's Republic of China have stated openly that they intend to conquer Taiwan at some point in the future if Taiwan does not surrender to them before then, and I see no reason to doubt their word. If they're going to invade anyway, isn't it better to "provoke" them by formally declaring independance before the Communists are ready?
