Ribbon to the Stars: Pushing the space elevator closer to reality. A space elevator would transform the economics of space travel, making ventures ranging from space spas to exotic scientific exploration more possible.

Even a decade ago, an elevator to the heavens seemed like sheer fantasy, akin to the beanstalk Jack climbed in the fairy tale. There was no material strong enough to make the cables. But an advance in one of the tiniest of technologies--carbon nanotubes--has given a boost to this most lofty of schemes.

The space elevator "is no longer science fiction," says David Smitherman of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.

Physicist Bradley C. Edwards agrees. He left a job at Los Alamos (N.M.) National Laboratory to work full-time on the elevator design for a private company, Eureka Scientific in Berkeley, Calif. Edwards says that the elevator could be a reality in just 15 years. He presented his latest ideas in August at a workshop on the space elevator in Seattle. [Science News]

Top Sniper Shootings Picture. AP via Yahoo News - Top Sniper Shootings Picture - is this the DC area sniper? Nope, but it sure doesn't look like a cop to me. I'd be tempted to shoot him if he walked up to my car. This photo shows the "Police" shirt, but why is this guy hiding his face? [smith2004] [End the War on Freedom]

This photo was also on the front page of the Los Angeles Times. The man in the photo doesn't look anything like a Police officer, but he does bear a striking resemblance to the bank robbers in Heat.

birdman. From birdman:
"Mr. Speaker, I rise in opposition to this resolution, which regardless of what many have tried to claim will lead us into war with Iraq. This resolution is not a declaration of war, however, and that is an important point: this resolution transfers the Constitutionally-mandated Congressional authority to declare wars to the executive branch." --Ron Paul
