Russia's War on Chechnya . The Moscow hostage crisis ended in a way one might expect,  through massive violence inflicted by a  state that has little regard for human life and an intense focus on displaying power. Russian troops pumped in poison gas that ended up killing 115 of the people the authorities were supposed to be rescuing.

Vladimir Putin apologized for the loss of life but made no comment addressing what everyone knows is the underlying motive force of all violence: Russia's refusal to permit the Chechen nation freedom from Moscow's despotic rule. The Chechans are long past the point of desperation. As the Chechen fighters who held 800 hostages at a Moscow theater told the Russian authorities: "We are more keen on dying than you are keen on living." [Ludwig von Mises Institute]

East Broadway Ron marched for peace in DC on Sat.  [Scripting News]

Here's an example of the sort of person Justin Raimondo was complaining about in the post below. Be warned, some of the photos "Ron" includes in his weblog are extremely distasteful--albeit quite indicative of his mentality and that of his fellow leftists.

I Ain't Marchin' Anymore. Justin Raimondo at Antiwar.com - I Ain't Marchin' Anymore - Mr. Raimondo is tired of the politics of the Communists who run the anti-war marches. He says that last Saturday's march in San Francisco will be his last. [grabbe] [End the War on Freedom]

In short, the antiwar forces, if they are to stop this war before it starts, or even to raise significant questions in the minds of most Americans, must recruit the hated bourgeoisie -- the object of the leftists' eternal scorn. The leftist grouplets that control both major "coalitions" -- "Answer" and "Not In Our Name" -- are not interested in building the antiwar movement, per se, so much as building their own little parties, and recruiting marchers in their next demonstration to free the convicted murderer and professional left-wing martyr Mumia abu-Jamal. And they lack the tactical ingenuity of their Communist Party USA ancestors, who at least had the good sense to come up with some counterintuitive but resonant slogans such as "Communism is 20th Century Americanism"!

Freenet 0.5 Released [Slashdot]

Although the Freenet site claims to have a Mac version, it's really just OS X. Too bad.
