CNN.com - Device stops speeders from inside car - Dec 4, 2005. The system being tested by Transport Canada, the Canadian equivalent of
the U.S. Department of Transportation, uses a global positioning
satellite device installed in the car to monitor the car's speed and
position. If the car begins to significantly exceed the speed limit for
the road on which it's travelling the system responds by making it
harder to depress the gas pedal, according to a story posted on the
Toronto Globe and Mail's Website. [Privacy Digest: Privacy News (Civil Rights, Encryption, Free Speech, Cryptography)]
CNN seems oblivious to the real purpose of this system--giving the Canadian government (and you can be sure the US is working on this too) the means to track the whereabouts and movements of everyone with a car.
Soon it will no longer be necessary for the cops to manually write down the license plates of cars at meetings of civil rights organization for future harrassment--now they'll be able to get that information at the push of a button without ever leaving their offices.
