The TPM chip assigns a unique, permanent identifier, which can't be changed, to every computer before it leaves the factory. So far, twenty million computers have the TPM chip. Most of them have been sold to large corporations for securing their networks. Starting in 2006, they will be installed in many consumer models.
What does this mean to privacy advocates. Unless you just recently bought a computer, I recommend buying the best computer that you can afford as soon as possible because you will want to keep it for awhile. A TPM-chipped computer will end your anonymity on the internet.
