The Devil is In the Details

CARP Sticks a Fork in Internet Radio.

Tonight it came to my attention that Kurt Hanson has been tracking the number of webcasters and internet radio stations going offline since the Final CARP Decision made by the Library of Congress on June 20, 2002. This decision issued a determination on proposed performance royalties webcasters will be forced to pay record companies and artists for the right to stream their music on the Internet. It is a fact of life that this royalty rate is so high that it will bankrupt the independant and college stations you have listened to in the past.

Here is the list of silenced stations by CARP as of July 11, 2002 (source Kurthanson.com)

What can you do?

Congress leaves for Summer Recess July 26, the Senate leaves August 2, 2002: so time is short. A group of webcasters and industry trade groups have formed VOW Voice on Webcasters. The site is a common ground for people to gather information from a supposed central source. At the moment the site is lacking a considerable amount historical information prior to the CARP Decision, however it does have one jewel worth following--

It allows anyone to fax their U.S. Congressmen and Senators a letter regarding the silencing of Internet Radio for free. Pass this information along to your friends and associates, please.

A picture named catchupsm.jpg Friday Thursday Afternoon Catch-up

I'm supposed to be resting. But... I'm catching up on my reading from being offline the past 20+ hours. For you nitpickers: This post will be edited. Get over it.

Yep I should have rested. Somehow the date on my notebook got reset a day ahead.

I called Doc to give him the scoop of where I was "hiding." Thanks for helping me out.

Now I'm reading all about what Carl Malamud of Mappa Mundi is giving a session on NetTopBoxes. DAMN! I want to be there to hear this!  Now Larry's backing it up with the reality check. DAMN DAMN DAMN!  We could talk about Hollywood's attitude of "we own it all, now pay us," but I'm not going to waste my energy here. GeekPac and the AOTC are part of the answer. But we will discuss this later.

Guess I'm not the only one on the sidelines. Dave's not going to SD. I kinda figured Dave was going to be good, stay home and recoup'.

I'm going to take a short nap... brb.

I Will Never Eat at Denny's Again OR Why I Didn't Make It to San Diego

I was supposed to be on my way to SD to OSCON and meet up with Doc and Company the other morning-- well I was. I left early in order to avoid some the the LA-OC traffic and decided to stop at Denny's in Irvine to grab a quick breakfast and a coffee. Nothing dramatic, but my body told me I needed fuel before I hit the Convention.

However that's where Murphy got into the equation. About 10-15 minutes after I left the resturant my body told me-- something's wrong. I felt like someone had hit me with a ton of bricks and I felt ill. Really really ill. Without boring or grossing you out, I ended up at one of the local OC ER's for the next 20 hours getting taken care of by some wonderful folks who were as concerned about me as they were about my notebook roasting inside my car.

One of the ER doctors went out to the car to retrieve the Omnibook for me so I'd have something to do while they kept pumping me with drugs, as well as to keep the notebook from burning up the screen in the intense SoCal heat. When the doctor found out I have a blog, the other half's a Clinical Pharmacist, and in another life I ran a med school, the conversation got friendly. Turns out the good doctor is interested in setting up a blog for ER-Med. Yes Dave, I sent him to the Radio site, and he loved it. :-)

I just survived the worst bout of Salmonella I've ever seen. The bad thing about it is some of these new strains of Salmonella are resistant to the normal course of antibotic treatment. However I got lucky. I got so ill I went to an ER quickly and they pumped me full of cefoxitin (Cipro). I'll survive but at the moment I'm pretty tired and weak-- and really pissed I'm missing the conference. I should have had a bagel at home before I left.
