Dear Dave,
Over the years I have had my differences with Mr Winer. Some of these have been fairly heated. I even got banned from his email box a few years ago.
Dave....I still think you are a little too thin skinned about criticism, but I have to say that I LOVE RADIO!! This is very cool. I don't know if I will be able to keep this up, but at first blush it is fantastic.
This is absolute freakin' genius. This could change everything. It is a killer app, it is a tool of ultimate democracy. The Soviets would have killed you. The Chinese may end up hating you. It is the printing press of the modern era. Now I have to sit back and think about how I am going to use this...mj

John Gilmore: What's Wrong With Copy Protection
Copy protection pretends that the law and some fancy footwork with industrial cartels can maintain our current economic structures, in the face of a hurricane of positive technological change that is picking them up and sending them whirling like so many autumn leaves. [Dave Winer: Michegas]
The music industry is facing dropping the prices of CDs this year. GUESS WHAT?? As usual they are blaming MP3s and looking at the symptoms -- not the problem. If they would just wake up and smell the coffee they might notice that they have built a financial structure that no one wants to support. THEY LIED to us in 1985 when CDs where young and told us that the price would come down (at the time a CD cost $14-$15, and an LP cost $10, CDs cost waaaayyyy less to make). Instead they built an industry under a price structure that just waited for something to send it falling. These people are so clueless.
I went in a music store the other day that was going out of business. I bought nothing because even at a 'going out of business' discount, the CDs still cost more than $15. I wonder why they went out of business...mj

iPhoto Makes Working with Pictures Fun Again
Of all the announcements Apple's Steve Jobs made at Macworld, the real star of the show turned out to be the company's new iPhoto. The same tedious task that previously took at least four different software applications to accomplish is made easy and enjoyable by iPhoto. I didn't realize working with my pictures could be so much fun. [osOpinion]
Tuesday afternoon, after the keynote, I went to my iDisk and copied iPhoto to my machine. I launched it and fell in love. It is simply an incredible piece of software. There are only a couple things that I would change.
1. The edit function needs brightness and contrast adjustment settings.
2. You need to be able to create an "edited" saved copy. I do love the fact that I can use Photshop or some other program for "super editing" but a couple additions wouldn't hurt.
3. I imported a bunch of my my art photo images, and I already have a 500+meg collection. The program seems slugish at times. It also crashes when I perform "complex" functions like trying to export or make a book. I have not entered the Home Page contest because I can't get it to complete a page.
Number three is serious but has not stopped me from my love for the program. This is a 1.0 release and I expect that just like iTunes, we will see updates in the near future...mj

Microsoft Seeks To Bar Public from Depositions
Attorneys for Microsoft filed a motion with the U.S. District Court to overturn a previous order that allowed the media to hear and read depositions -- sworn oral testimony from potential witnesses -- in the ongoing antitrust case. [osOpinion]
I have only one question...why? Is it not better for our society to see these things in the light of day? Perhaps MS is worried that these will go as badly as the depsitions did last time...mj

New iMac Lives Up to the Hype
Apple Computer seems to be able to attract lavish attention when it introduces a new product, and it does so regularly. Hyperbole begins well in advance of each Macworld, springing up first in the various Macintosh publications and Mac rumor sites. [osOpinion]

Tomorrow is another day, and a special one at that.
Tomorow I become a student again. Soon it's off to bed so I can stay awake through 5 hours...
4.5 years ago I left the illusion of big corporate security. Now I live in the realm of startup insecurity. Is it really all that different?
It's time to move on and get ready for some different adventures...mj

Judge tosses MS schools settlement
A federal judge in Baltimore rejects a controversial settlement that would have ended more than 100 private class-action lawsuits against the software maker. [CNET News.com]
DUH!! This was one of thise no-brainer decisions. It is SO obvious that this thing is anti-competetive. Who the hell thinks up this sh*t...mj
