Ralph wants MS to pay
Consumer advocate Ralph Nader wants Microsoft to pay out dividends, or pay excess taxes on $30+ billion dollar hoard.

...just another 'rich get richer' story. Microsoft has been able to amass the largest cash hoard in US coporate history...bet they get away with it...mj

InfoWorld: Bride of UCITAstein
The one thing I've learned in all these years of observing the process that created this monster is that no matter how much it seems to change, it never really does in the long run. [Tomalak's Realm]

...this thing is just too scary. It is also a sign that Hollywood and the music industry [many of the same morons] just don't don't have a clue. The avalanche has begun, it is just too late...mj

Today's Quote
"The very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. Instead of altering their views to fit the facts, they alter the facts to fit their views...which can be very uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that needs altering."

On Friends...
I visited with a dear old friend yesterday. I have known Brian for more than 20 years. It's funny to look at the arc of relationships and the value of friendship.

Over the holidays I had to deal with a lot of issues around being laid off and not having cash due to said former employer not paying out the last two pay checks. There is nothing fun about not getting paid just before Christmas. The pay issue is to be settled [we hope] this week. But in the meantime it has not been one of the most ego-supporting experiences.

The one thing that has amazed me is that I have found out who my real friends are. I have had a chance to revisit the relationships that surround me, The kindness not of strangers, but of friends. It simply points out the importance of 'people', 'my people', the 'people' who matter. You may not be able to count on anyone, but if you build a circle of friends, you at least have a chance.

As I sat on the couch last night talking about a million and a few things, I realized that it was the ease and the comfort of the conversation that mattered most. It felt like a a place that I belonged in.

It was a safe place...mj

Bush feeds the scandal
The president's claim that Enron's chief supported his Texas opponent -- at best an evasion, at worst a lie -- drags the White House a step deeper into Enrongate. [Salon.com]

Somehow I just don't think this will go away. Once again the little guy gets slapped while the big guys walk away with everything. If scandal was good enough for the Republicans on Clinton, then this will be good for the Democrats...then again perhaps not...mj
