On Friends...
I visited with a dear old friend yesterday. I have known Brian for more than 20 years. It's funny to look at the arc of relationships and the value of friendship.
Over the holidays I had to deal with a lot of issues around being laid off and not having cash due to said former employer not paying out the last two pay checks. There is nothing fun about not getting paid just before Christmas. The pay issue is to be settled [we hope] this week. But in the meantime it has not been one of the most ego-supporting experiences.
The one thing that has amazed me is that I have found out who my real friends are. I have had a chance to revisit the relationships that surround me, The kindness not of strangers, but of friends. It simply points out the importance of 'people', 'my people', the 'people' who matter. You may not be able to count on anyone, but if you build a circle of friends, you at least have a chance.
As I sat on the couch last night talking about a million and a few things, I realized that it was the ease and the comfort of the conversation that mattered most. It felt like a a place that I belonged in.
It was a safe place...mj
