They're Old Jim...
This is a rant...

First, let's understand...I love Star Trek. As a kid I have no stronger memories of TV then the three seasons of Star Trek. I have watched every episode, of every season, of every show since then. I have seen every movie at least two times, though Star Trek V was a real chore.

What really irritates me are people who can't understand that there is a difference between reality and TV. I am on an SF mail list and occasionally I get to hear from people who argue over the weirdest things. As an example, one person didn't like 'First Contact' because the actor playing Cochron was not as good looking as the one in the original series...ok, does it really matter? What does it have to do with the story?

Then there was the argument over why they didn't make any more ST movies with the original cast...I pointed out they are old, ST movies have a strong action elelment...

I got this wonderful response:
"...'Old' depends on who you ask..."

Let's use the facts...

  • Leonard Nimoy born: March 26, 1931 (age 70)
  • William Shatner born: March 22, 1931 (age 70)
  • James Doohan born: Mar 03, 1920 (age 81)
  • DeForest Kelly died: June 11, 1999 (age 79)
  • George Takei born: April 20, 1937 (age 64)
  • Nichelle Nichols born: December 28, 1933 (age 68)
  • Walter Keonig born: September 14, 1936 (age 63)
Let's face the sad fact that all of our heroes grow older and die. It sucks, but it's the real world. It's nice to note that if they were all at their ages in the period of TNG they would still be serving full time in Star Fleet. In our reality things are different.

Do not mistake my comments for prejudice. I have some wonderful friends who are in their 70s and 80s. They are vital people who enjoy life and are still very active. I can only hope to have their energy when I'm that age...mj

Bad eBay experience spurs Internet manhunt
The posse dogging an online auction seller seized control of his e-mail account, grilled his mother and even assumed his identity in a nationwide hunt for a man they believe swindled as much as $125,000 from buyers through fraudulent Internet auctions. [Chicago Tribune]

...a little less than two years ago I bought a Pentium III from a guy off eBay. I have over 200 auctions to my credit and I still missed the signs. Eight weeks later I had no chip and stopped getting emails from the seller.

I went into overdrive. I got his eBay account closed, I got his PayPal account frozen. But I found out that eBay really will do NOTHING other than send emails and say harsh words...nothing. I found that he had ripped off a number of other people. I tracked him down to a 6 block area of Honolulu. In the end he responded to one of my emails after I made it clear to him that my mother had worked with the Honolulu Police Department, and I had friends and family with connections. The last thing he wanted was for some friends to show up at his doorstep.

I didn't get the chip, but I got other hardware and equipment that I sold off for almost the same value....and I got the satisfaction of the thrill of the hunt...mj

The week in review: Courting Microsoft
No stranger to the courtroom, the software giant finds itself embroiled in a barrage of legal filings related to its antitrust woes, but that doesn't mean it's taking it lying down. [CNET News]

...another week in court...MS is spending more and more time dealing with legal issues...over time this has to distract the company...in the end it will cost MS much of its ability to move forward...mj
