Mr. Gates Redux...
I can't shake the image of Bill Gates standing on a tropical beach with explosions and flames all about...a sigh..."I love the smell of monopoly in the morning." Ok, I admit it's a little over the top (no, way over), but this is a guy who always lives with the idea that the destruction of his company is just around the corner. It's that idea that drives much of his and his employees behavior. It is also what will; in the end, bring about the fall of the House of MS.

JD says: "I don't know anyone who has shied away from Microsoft products because they've got security holes. (Yes, I know they're out there, somewhere.) I do, however, know of dozens of disgruntled computer users who would gladly drop Microsoft products in a heartbeat, given a viable alternative, because of Redmond's neglect of user needs."

On the surface I agree. As someone who prefers the soul of my Macs to the cold tool that are my PCs, I can understand JDs perspective. MS has struggled for years to make their machines more friendly, more user focused. In the end it is the legacy of being a machine for 'Business' that strangles MS. It is the soul of a machine, no more, no less. The Mac was created as a 'Personal' tool, and as such has always had a different attachment for its users.

Security is a business word that can spill out into the world of common users. It is the fear of losing its edge that drives MS. Usability is a concern for the personal user, because we have choices to make. In the business world it is expense, and the need to appear 'correct' that drives most decisions. If Usability were such a big business concern, then nobody would touch desktop Linux with a ten foot pole...mj

...Dave Winer has linked me off Scripting News -- thanks Dave. So far this has been a lot of fun. I like the flow, the ability to spew forth thoughts...whatever catches my eye. I would suggest that folks try some of the bookmarklets that are available. RadioExpress is great!...mj

Cisco's Worst Nightmare
Tech's big guns are waging war with a new foe: used-equipment sellers. John Lynch and other scavengers are stealing equipment giants' sales. [Fortune.com]

...more dotbomb fallout. This is not a new story, but the reaction of Cisco to the situation is new. The ugly flip-side to the dotcom bloom that went boom...mj

2002 buzz: Where to from here?
From the boardroom of Ramp Technology Group in downtown Bellevue, you can see remnants of the dot-com implosion. Empty office space. Still cranes. Gaping holes where buildings failed to rise. [The Seattle Times]

...it was the annus horribilis. For me it was a year that changed everything. This is a good piece that looks forward and asks the question -- what have we learned?...mj
