Cindy's final ride goes awry
Cindy the elephant was buried at the Pierce County Landfill in Graham, covered with dirt and then garbage - against the wishes of Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium officials who thought they had arranged a more dignified disposal for the popular pachyderm.
"We're very disappointed and very upset," zoo spokeswoman Jean Jackman said Monday. "The entire zoo staff is upset."

My sister called me in tears earlier today. We grew up with Cindy and were horrified at the news. There is simply no excuse for what happened. Next to the Bear that was shot many years ago, I would call this the saddest day in Zoo history.
In 1974 I worked at the Park, I did gardening and landscaping around the Zoo. I used to go give Cindy some fresh grass every day. I could call her name and she would head right over to me, reach out and take the grass from me. I am heartbroken that this animal was so rudely treated.
