Windows users can be rather strange people, and the staff who man the counters in Windows computer shops can be even stranger. They seem to be genuinely horrified when you mention the name Macintosh.
I was in such a store today, buying a USB PCI card for my 1997 Umax S900 Macintosh clone, and when the salesman asked what version of Windows I was using I replied that it was for a computer running Mac OS 9 and X. He raised his hands in the air, as if I was sticking a gun in his face.
Trying to mollify him, I said, “Look, the card is only going into an old Mac clone. It’ll be alright!” He slowly lowered his hands and then he said, “But there are no Mac clones. Nothing you install in a PC can go inside a Mac. Macs are totally different. They’re nothing like PCs at all.”
I felt obliged to gently point out that, yes, there were Mac clones and many of them are still in daily use today, and I had one, and even current mini-tower Power Macs had plenty of slots for extra PCI devices, and you can easily replace other parts in Macs with stuff bought in PC stores. But I sensed he did not really believe me, because he was still shaking his head as I typed my PIN number into the EFTPOS terminal.
As I was exiting the store, I turned around and saw that the other two salesmen had joined him behind the counter, and all three of them were watching me with utter amazement on their faces. I was the guy who dared propose installing a PCI card into a Macintosh.
