I have the habit of flipping through the West Australian newspaper’s The West Magazine, essentially a weekly TV guide, on a Saturday and underlining anything that looks remotely interesting with a yellow fluorescent highlighter pen.
Then, when I need the sound of a human voice or a bit of distraction during a day spent in front of the computer, I look at which channel has gone the most yellow, and turn it on. Channel 31, a local community access channel, has been getting the biggest workout on my TV set each day, closely followed by SBS.
31 shows a number of Deutsche Welle news and feature programs in English in the middle of the day and the BBC World News twice daily, while SBS of course broadcasts news programs in English, German, French and Italian amongst other languages each morning, not to mention the movies each evening.
These two TV channels, as well as the Internet, do a huge amount to allay the feeling of separation from the world that can overcome you in a place like Perth.
