Some very interesting books coming soon from the folks at New Riders on the subject of Flash:
  • Skip Intro: Flash Usability and Interface Design
  • Flash MX Application Design & Development: Thinking Outside the Box
  • The Flash MX Project
  • Inside Flash MX
  • Flash MX Magic
  • Flash MX Audio Magic
Skip Intro is the one I am really looking forward to. Rejecting Flash completely just because some designers have used it extremely badly in the past is an insane yet surprisingly common attitude. Books like this that teach us how to use Flash well are more than welcome, and certainly overdue. Regarding so many Flash tricks and gimmicks popular in the past: just because it can be done does not mean it should be done.
Usability must be taken into account, but not at the expense of a technology that makes for better, more effective web design when used well.

Some online learning resources that are very definitely checking out—one based in Bondi Beach, Sydney and very competitively priced, while the other is supported by one of the best book publishers.
  • Western Civilisation: courses on CSS 1 and 2, web colour and graphics, HTML 4.0 and XHTML.
  • New Riders: web design, graphic design, new media marketing, multimedia, digital design, with certificate programs and short courses.
