Henry Jenkins: Placements, People!
I met Henry at a conference at USC years ago, and got to talking with him about fan fiction and the notion that people can make their own content with digital actors. I'm always eager to read his articles, because he gets it far more than me.
As inhabitants of a consumer culture, we broadcast our brand preferences through our clothing and our home decorations. So, why should television characters be any different?
I was telling a friend about this fact of our society earlier this year, and she got upset at the implication that the brands we adorn our lives with speaks to who we are. I still believe that is true, and not necessarily bad. Punk took fashion statement to a new extreme, and in doing so created it's own brand. Madonna refreshes her brand with each new album/fashion. In our personal lives, we wrap ourselves in clothes, watches, shoes, cars, and homes that reflect who we are, and also define our individual brand (which may be shades of a base brand identity).
