Ogopogo, Mo`olele, Champ and Tessie
I saw a travel channel show that mentioned
Ogopogo, a mythical Lake Monster in Lake Okanagan,
in British Columbia just north of the Washington
border. I had heard of the Loch Ness Monster, and
of Tahoe Tessie. So ... naturally, several folks
have made up lists of Lake Monsters ...
My wife has family in Vermont; a cousin lives in Newport,
at the south end of Lake Memphremagog. I hadn't heard about
"Memphré", though. I vaguely recalled Champ, from
Lake Champlain.
One favorite song of mine, "Mo`olele", recorded by the
Makaha Sons of Ni`ihau in the mid-1980's, is named for a boat.
Moana is Ocean, and olele is Lizard, so the boat is named
after another sea serpent.
What I wonder is, whether Lake Baikal has some kind
of Baikalskoe BogMonster. Maybe, in order to survive
the climate, the people that live around there have to
be too practical to make up legends like these.
