Matt Croydon - Apache Geronimo

The Apache Foundation is building a new product in the J2EE space:

Apache J2EE Project.

An open letter from Greg Stein as posted in The Inquirer:

The project (tentatively named "Apache Geronimo") builds upon the many Java projects at the Apache Software Foundation. In addition, the project is bringing together leading members of the Castor, JBoss, MX4J and OpenEJB communities. We would like to extend an open invitation to everyone involved in the J2EE space, both commercial entities and talented individuals, to join the community and build a world-class J2EE implementation.

This struck my by suprise, but I haven't been paying too close attention to J2EE rumblings as of late.  It's an excellent project to undertake, and I wish the Geronimo developers good luck.

2003 Denver Mayoral Transition

Mayor Hickenlooper is taking a hard look at lobbying contracts left over from the prior administration, according to the Denver Post [August 5, 2003, "Mayor ends lobbying pact"]. This is an area where he and Don Mares agreed during the election. The Post quotes Michael Bennet as saying, "We're going to decide if it's worthwhile to have paid lobbyists or if it's more efficient to do things another way."

Denver Charter Changes for the November 2003 Election

City workers have sent Mayor Hickenlooper over 50 e-mail messages with suggestions on improving City services, lowering costs, and commenting on the proposed Charter amendment, according to the Rocky Mountain News [August 5, 2003, "Hickenlooper gets eyeful of e-mails from workers"]. The article states that the next public hearing will be at 5:30PM tomorrow at the Museum of Science and Nature.

2003 November Election

Mayor Hickenlooper and several members of City Council are hoping to get approval from the voters on a Charter amendment to remove language that ties City worker pay to a salary survey. City workers that live in Denver will surely go to the polls but how about other voters?

Here's a story from the Rocky Mountain News [August 5, 2003, "Groups file for Nov. ballot"] about a couple of the ballot issues that voters will be asked to approve November 4th along with a table listing three possible ballot issues [August 5, 2003, "Possible Nov. 4 ballot issues"]. Denver's favorite Auditor may see the Gallagher Amendment modified along with video lottery terminals. Another hot issue will be the $2 Billion that the Govenor is requesting for water projects. That money'll be used to repair and improve existing dams instead of big new water projects. Exactly what projects would be funded is not clear. Here's a story on the issue from the Denver Post [August 5, 2003, "Gaming likely to get slot on ballot"].

Will the voters turnout for this election? Only around 30% elected Mayor Hickenlooper and the rest of the newly elected City officials.
