2003 Denver Mayoral Transition
Here's an article from the Rocky Mountain News [August 26, 2003, "Whitman to stay as chief of police"] about Mayor Hickenlooper's appointment of Gerry Whitman as Chief of Police. From the article, "The mayor also gave Whitman a handful of directives that include reassessing the city's use-of-force policies, making sure the department reflects the diversity of the community and streamlining the complaint and discipline process." The Rocky [August 26, 2003, "Many officers pleased with mayor's decision"] takes a look at the reaction to the appointment here along with a list of directives to Whitman from the Mayor [August 26, 2003, "Mayor's directives to Whitman"] and a short bio of the Chief [August 25, 2003, "Gerry Whitman bio"].
Here's the coverage from the Denver Post [August 26, 2003, "Mayor keeps Whitman as police chief"]. From the article, "One of the most serious issues facing Whitman is to gain the trust of some city neighborhoods. Emotions in Park Hill, for instance, where Childs was shot and killed by a police officer in July, still run high. 'I think they have a legitimate concern about police conduct,' Whitman said. The Rev. Paul Martin of Macedonia Baptist Church in northeast Denver, who officiated at Childs' funeral, said Whitman must re-evaluate the use of force by officers and should see that officer Jim Turney, who shot Childs, is disciplined."
The Rocky Mountain News [August 26, 2003, "Denver police chiefs at a glance"] is also running a historical look at Denver police chiefs over the years. The job is not kind to the men that have held it.
The Rocky Mountain News [August 26, 2003, "Chief Whitman the right choice"] also has an editorial praising Whitman's re-appointment. From the editorial, "The mayor has made a good choice with Whitman. He's open, smart and dedicated to molding the Denver department into one of the most respected forces in the country. And despite the controversies of the recent past, the chief has done a good job at pushing the department in the direction it needs to go. Now, fortunately, he gets a chance to finish the job."
