Steve Gillmor - Creative Community

I'm reading a book called The Rise of the Creative Class by Richard Florida. So far Florida seems to be making a case for creative communities that share geography and an economy. I'm reminded of Simon Phipps and his ideas around communities of interest.

Steve Gillmor describes types of creative communities: "Burlesque was the first wiki, a melting pot of ideas, political tracts, and good timing."

2003 Denver Mayoral Transition

Mayor Hickenlooper plans to tap Andrew Wallach's institutional knowledge by hiring him as a consultant for the Mayor and the Denver Water Department. Wallach resigned from the Water Board to clear the way for the Mayor to appoint a member according to the Denver Post [August 7, 2003, "Wallach resigns from Water Board"]. From the article, "Board president Denise Maes said she has 'heard a couple of names' of possible replacements, but wouldn't elaborate. Michael Bennet, Hickenlooper's chief of staff, said Hickenlooper has no replacement lined up or a timeline for his decision."

November 2003 Election

Attorney General Ken Salazar is against Referendum A according to the Denver Post [August 8, 2003, "Salazar says Referendum A will create 'water war"]. From the article, "Politicians including U.S. Reps. Scott McInnis, R-Colo., and Mark Udall, D-Colo., are opposing the measure, along with many Western Slope state legislators. Gov. Bill Owens has vowed to campaign for the issue, and U.S. Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, R-Colo., is the most prominent official hailing from the Western Slope to support it. The referendum would allow local groups to use the bonding authority to pay for water projects whose proceeds will be paid off by profits from the projects." Here's another story from the Post [August 8, 2003, "Bonding measure drawing opposition"] on the subject and one from the Rocky Mountain News [August 8, 2003, "$2 billion 'blank check' booed"].
