2003 Denver Mayoral Transition

Update: Mayor Hickenlooper has also appointed John Huggins as Director of Economic Development. City employees received a copy of the press release from Lindy Eichenbaum Lent.

Mayor Hickenlooper has appointed Maria Guajardo Lucero to head up the Mayor's Office on Education and Children according to the Rocky Mountain News [August 14, 2003, "Search co-chair tapped for job"]. The Rocky is also reporting that the Mayor is expected to appoint Cec Ortiz to head up the Mayor's Office on Workforce Development.

Here's an update on the status of Mayor Hickenlooper's appointments from the Rocky Mountain News [August 14, 2003, "Update on mayoral appointments"].

One of the finalists for Chief of Police, Brian Gallagher, is the subject of an ongoing investigation by Internal Affairs, according to the Rocky Mountain News [August 14, 2003, "Police chief candidate faces probe"]. From the article, "The investigation into Gallagher's conduct stems from a June 12, 2002, incident in which he confronted two motorists who had passed a road-striping crew in the 4700 block of Gun Club Road. The area is in rural Arapahoe County. According to copies of the Arapahoe County sheriff's report on the incident, Gallagher was on his way to work when he saw one man pull out and pass the crew. A large, flashing "do not pass" sign was on the back of the crew's truck. Gallagher, in uniform and driving an unmarked Denver police car, stopped the motorist, according to the reports. Once he had that vehicle stopped, Gallagher saw another motorist passing the road-striping crew. Gallagher later told investigators he felt the motorist was going to hit him, so he pulled his gun and ordered the man to the side of the road."
