Colorado Water

The Forest Service is close to making a decision that will protect some water rights for ski areas, according to the Denver Post [February 6, 2004, "Policy change would let ski areas keep water rights"]. From the article, "U.S. Forest Service officials say they are close to resolving a long- standing dispute over water rights that has implications for several of Colorado's major ski resorts. Under the proposed change, the agency would eliminate a requirement that ski resorts transfer their water rights to the federal government. That requirement is one of the key issues in a still- pending appeal of the revised White River National Forest plan filed by several ski resorts."

Denver November 2004 Election

Govenor Owens is against those that would solve the Perfect Storm of Amendment 23, the Gallagher Amendment, and TABOR by going after just TABOR, according to the Rocky Mountain News [February 6, 2004, "Owens on the offensive"]. That may be good news for the folks trying to get an amendment on the fall ballot. Owen's admits that it is worrisome that he couldn't pass Referendum A last November, in the middle of a 300 year drought.

Voters may get a chance to vote on term limits for judges, according to the Denver Post [February 6, 2004, "Republicans may seek judicial term limits"]. The article quotes John Andrews, Senate President, as saying, "Every day brings fresh examples of judges who think they can make the law. It concerns me that the judges are not somehow under a similar term limit, and if we could find a way to put all three branches under one term limit, we should try." They also quote, Senate Minority Leader, Joan Fitz-Gerald, as saying, "This is just part of the GOP plan that says, 'We don't have three separate-but-equal branches of government,' and that 'We write the rules.' And frankly, I'm sick of it." The Republicans are still smarting after the lack of sympathy they've received from state and federal courts over redistricting. The Democrats feel like they'll be bullied no matter what and the courts are the last line of defense against the Republican majority. Term limits may hit rural areas hard just as they do for District Attorneys.

Update: Mike Miles sent e-mail to subscribers tonight. They lay out his background and ask for help and contributions. The URL for his website is wrong. Here's the link. They also use 6 different fonts on the page. That's too many Mr. Miles. Anyway it's cool to see the local people getting out the work and continuing to work to win elections.

2004 Presidential Election

A picture named brokethebat26.jpg After going 0 for 9 in the early primaries and caucuses, Howard Dean is drawing a line in the sand in Wisconsin. He's asking supporters to raise dough of course and they're doing a great job. I wonder if they'll back John Kerry or any other nominee as Dean has promised he will?

Here's an article from the New Republic about the Dean campaign and their ability to raise dough. Thanks to Taegan Goddard for the link. From the article, "Even if tending to the grassroots hasn't netted Dean much electoral support, though, it does pay the bills. Even now, as Dean loses state after state, his campaign is still raising as much as a quarter of a million dollars per day online. The Internet failed miserably as an organizing tool in Iowa, yet Dean still managed to raise more money after his distant third-place finish there than John Edwards did following his strong second."

The polls have not been way off since Iowa and New Hampshire so it's not looking good for Dean's last stand as reported by the Daily Kos.

Blogs for Bush is taking on the imminent threat meme.
