Denver November 2004 Election
Colorado Democrats may have found another person interested in a run for Ben Nighthorse Campbell's senate seat, according to the Denver Post [February 16, 2004, "Software exec explores bid for U.S. Senate"]. From the article, "Software entrepreneur Rutt Bridges is looking at coming out from behind the scenes of the Democratic Party to join the race to take on the Republican incumbent. Bridges put hundreds of thousands of dollars into 2002 ballot initiatives, and says that if he gets into the Senate race, 'I can put in just about as much money as I wanted to.' But putting millions of your own dollars into a campaign isn't as effective in the wake of campaign finance reform. The new law includes a 'millionaire's amendment' that protects incumbents from wealthy challengers."
From State Senator Dan Grossman's weblog: "I spent the better part of two weeks considering a late-starting campaign for the U.S. Senate. Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colorado) is up for re-election and many Democratic insiders have been searching for a well-known and/or wealthy opponent to run against him. So why they came to me, I'm still not sure! At any rate, being considered as a viable candidate for the U.S. Senate and being encouraged to run by national Democrats and incumbent Senators, was truly an honor. And the prospect of addressing the most important issues facing our nation today (such as the foundering economy and the jobless recovery, the ballooning federal budget deficit, the long-term viability of social security and medicare, the Bush foreign policy doctrine of expedient unilateralism, and protecting our environmental heritage for future generations to enjoy) certainly was appealing to me, especially in a presidential election year. But Robin and I thought long and hard about the time and effort and personal and professional sacrifice that would be needed to mount this type of an effort in just nine months, and we decided it was not the right opportunity for us. There are some good Democrats already in the race, including Mike Miles and Brad Freedberg, and some impressive Democrats considering jumping in (like Rutt Bridges). So in the words of Jerry Seinfeld who tried to avoid a sprinting rematch against his high-school nemesis who accused him of cheating the first time around:'I choose not to run!' At least not yet." There you have it, in his own words. You gotta love weblogs.
