2004 Presidential Election
Here's a short article about John Kerry and George Bush, their Vietnam era service, and how it is playing out in Colorado, from the Rocky Mountain News [September 24, 2004, "A battleground issue"]. From the article, "The Vietnam-era records of George W. Bush and John Kerry are of little importance to a large majority of Colorado voters, but significant to a pivotal voting bloc. And those strong feelings among some of the state's veterans could give an ever-so-slight edge to Bush, a Rocky Mountain News/News 4 poll indicates."
Taegan Goddard: "Although neither President Bush nor Sen. John Kerry 'has a clear advantage among registered voters, Bush holds an edge over Kerry among those likely to vote on Election Day,' according to a new Marist College Poll. Among registered voters, Bush leads 47% to 45%. Among likely voters, Bush leads 50% to 44%. An AP/Ipsos Public Affairs poll shows the president 'holds a 17-point lead among men. And Bush and Kerry are tied among women, a traditionally Democratic group that now favors Bush on protecting the country.' Here are the latest state polls: Montana - Bush 54, Kerry 36 (Mason-Dixon)."

Electoral-vote.com: "One thing I did not mention yesterday but many of you mentioned is the wild swing in Wisconsin. That is indeed very fishy. But there are wild swings today too. Florida went from Kerry by 1 to Bush by 8. Even more unlikely is the change in Oregon, which went from a 12% Kerry lead yesterday to a 1% Bush lead today. Such wide swings are just not believable in the absence of major news. The only variable being changed is which pollster is doing the reporting. If you haven't checked out the pollster page, you might want to do it to see how the map is affected by who is doing the polling."
Update: Opinions You Should Have: "In a press conference hastily called early this morning, John Ashcroft announced that, ever since he diverted Cat Stevens's flight and sent him back to England, he has been followed by a 'moonshadow.'"
