Last year on this day

One year ago Coyote Gulch was excited to be attending the Digital Democracy Teach-in. This was a couple of days before Howard Dean's campaign started off into the sunset. Many of us who had signed up for the teach-in still thought that the Internet had replaced the need for the political parties. Dean's showings in all of the polls had served to reinforce that view. Kerry was climbing but surely he represented the past.

As it was, in a few short weeks, Kerry won Iowa and New Hamphire. Dean fired Joe Trippi so Mr. Trippi had the time to be a speaker at the teach-in. Internet time indeed.

I'm still stoked about the possibilities for weblogs in politics and campaigning. I'll extend my offer to help any office holder or candidate start a weblog. Free of charge.

Social Security

Roger Lowenstein: "But in this 70-year struggle, no other conservative has ever come as close to transforming the program as George W. Bush. He is making Social Security reform, including a partial privatization, a centerpiece of his second term. If the most ardent ideologues have their way, such a reform would be a first step toward a wholly new approach to retirement security -- one that would set aside the notion of collective insurance and guaranteed minimums for that of personal investing and responsibility." Thanks to Josh Marshall for the link.

Marshall is also taking the administration to task, "And why is it exactly that President Bush's phase-out agenda is incorporated as part of the official talking points for SSA?"
