Iraqi Election

Check out Mike Keefe's cartoon in today's Post.

The Friends of Democracy sponsored an Electoral debate yesterday in Samawa, Al Muthanna province. They write, "The debate started with a reading from the Holy Qur'an for Iraq martyrs. The moderator then gave 10 minutes to each candidate to present himself..."

Kurdo's World: "It has been a few nights when everyone goes out at night celeberating the elections campaign in the freezing cold. Snow has been falling in the recent days in some parts of Kurdistan but despite that people are happy for the elections coming up." More pictures of Iraqi campaign materials.

2004 Presidential Transition

Juan Cole (not a supporter of the administration nor the war in Iraq) has his own ideas as to why Douglas Feith is resigning. Cole writes, "Having a Likudnik as the number three man in the Pentagon is a nightmare for American national security, since Feith could never be trusted to put US interests over those of Ariel Sharon. In the build-up to the Iraq War, Feith had a phalanx of Israeli generals visiting him in the Pentagon and ignored post-9/11 requirements that they sign in...Feith is clearly resigning ahead of the possible breaking of major scandals concerning his tenure at the Department of Defense, which is among the more disgraceful cases of the misleading of the American people in American history."

2008 Presidential Election

Five Denver City Council members are helping Wellington Webb raise dough for his run to lead the Democratic National Committee, according to the Denver Post [January 28, 2005, "Council members to host Webb fundraiser"]. From the article, "Elbra Wedgeworth, Carol Boigon, Rosemary Rodriguez, Judy Montero and Michael Hancock will host a $100- a-person reception for Webb on Tuesday at The Palm in Denver. Webb has received some funding from Rutt Bridges, founder of Denver's Bighorn Center for Public Policy and a possible Democratic candidate for governor in 2006. Webb's campaign refuses to identify other donors and won't say how much money it has raised in Webb's campaign to replace Terry McAuliffe as national party chair when DNC members vote on Feb. 12."

Taegan Goddard: "'It's supposed to be a rigged deal.' -- Democratic strategist James Carville, quoted by the Wall Street Journal, complaining that the race for DNC chairman could be a 'spectacle of chaos.'"

Here's a long post from Josh Marshall about the the race for DNC Chair.
