Democracy in Progress

Very cool. A new weblog from Paul Thompson. He's a Castle Rock Democrat running for the Chairmanship of the Douglas County Democrats. Mr. Thompson seems to get weblogging. Good luck.

Thompson writes, "It's true that our county has a good number of lifelong Republicans who might not have the presence of mind to re-examine their values like Joanna Conti did. But a much larger fraction are young families without a strong political identity, who move here and change their affiliation to Republican because they've been led to believe it's required of them. We can change that, and fairly quickly, by reaching out to them, showing that we are the party that cares about the future of our children. I think we can do that, which is why I'm running."

Colorado Water

Front Range Mayors are expected to sign a conservation pledge today, according to the Denver Post [January 22, 2005, "Front Range mayors to sign water-conservation pact"]. From the article, "Organized by the Metro Mayors Caucus, the agreement outlines broad principles of water conservation, such as utilizing best management practices and recognizing the environmental and economic impacts of new water projects on mountain communities." Good idea.

Columbus Day Protestors

Correction: Just a note. The Columbus Day Protestors are being prosecuted out of Denver's City Attorney's office (Cole Finegan) not the District Attorney's office (Mitch Morrisey). Ralph and I were mistaken earlier in the week.

2004 Presidential Transition

Michael Powell announced his resignation as FCC Chairman yesterday. Here's the coverage from the Denver Post [January 22, 2005, "FCC Chairman Powell to quit, as expected"]. From the article, "Administration officials and industry executives said that two leading contenders had emerged to succeed Powell, who is the son of Colin Powell, the outgoing secretary of state. One is Kevin Martin, a Republican commissioner and former White House official who several times foiled Powell's attempts to deregulate broadcasters and telephone companies. The other is Becky Klein, a former Texas regulator appointed in the 1990s by President Bush, who was then the state's governor. Klein lost a congressional bid two months ago. Her campaign received a large amount of financial support from executives at telecommunications companies who expected she would be a top contender for the FCC job. Both Martin and Klein have close ties to Bush and track records that are less ideological than Powell's. Both have taken steps as regulators that at times have angered the large Bell companies and at other times pleased them."
