A picture named hippieanddarnproudofit.jpg

Rod Dreher (quoted by Unclaimed Territory): "I had a heretical thought for a conservative - that I have got to teach my kids that they must never, ever take Presidents and Generals at their word - that their government will send them to kill and die for noble-sounding rot - that they have to question authority.

"On the walk to the parking garage, it hit me. Hadn't the hippies tried to tell my generation that? Why had we scorned them so blithely?"

Thanks to Mathew Gross for the link.

Political Wire: "On Sunday afternoon, John Edwards will speak at the historic Riverside Church in Harlem. Just about 40 years ago, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. announced his opposition to the war in Vietnam from the same pulpit. In a short video released today, Edwards previews his speech in which he will call on members of Congress to block funding of President Bush's escalation of the war in Iraq.

ABC News: "In an exclusive interview with ABC News in Baghdad, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., called the situation in Iraq 'heartbreaking' and said she doubts Congress and the American people believe the mission here can succeed."

Thanks to Oliver Willis who writes, "In 2008 there are going to be litmus tests for Democratic candidates - if they voted for the war, would they vote the same way now? They must be in favor of redeploying from Iraq like the majority of the party is. Their position can't be 'a little of this and a little of that' like John Kerry in 2004. Iraq is the central issue of our time, the Democratic standard bearer must be on the right side of history for the good of the party and the country."

Political Wire: "A tipster with knowledge of Sen. Barack Obama's (D-IL) presidential campaign planning hints that an official announcement may be made on the Chicago-based Oprah Winfrey Show this week. The Oprah schedule for Wednesday, January 17 says to 'check back later' for more details on the show. Since all shows are taped in advance, this suggests something is up."
