Anyone who thinks technology will stop advancing because of the economic slowdown, should sit down and think what can be done with Transparent Aluminium.

Another company that is raising interesting questions is Avantgo. I've gotten a few emails with pointers to a new policy of charging information providers to flow content through Avantgo's content management system. To be honest, since I'm not a palmtop user, I'm not sure what Avantgo's system does. We publish a version of Scripting News that's suitable for reading on palmtops. It's not economically feasible for us to pay to have it distributed, so if we are presented with a bill we'll probably decline. But that may be up to our readers. Is there economic value in the content we create? Avantgo seems to be betting that there is. [Scripting News]
Avantgo is too slow (as a company) and never had a business plan worth its salt. I don't think you can charge for information that you can get for free elsewhere. I used Avantgo, but had to stop when Palm Desktop for Mac OS X came out (Avantgo hasn't produce the conduit necessary for the connection to work), surprisingly, I haven't miss it at all. I hope I can get some internet connection in my VisorPhone so I can get some e-mail and use an internet browser (Blade sounds good) in emergencies.

Did you know that Congress has extended existing copyright terms 11 times in the past 40 years?

Justices to Review Copyright Extension. The Supreme Court agreed to decide whether the 1998 law that extended the duration of existing copyrights by 20 years was constitutional. [The New York Times: Technology]
Congress stole those materials from the commons, where they belong. Why don't we call them pirates?
If the Supreme Court does the right thing a repel the law, they will become the heroes of a new internet.
