Clive Robertson - if you have a chance to hear Clive - do it! 6:50:59 AM    Comments ()

Unable to say sorry - more from the interview:

BARRIE CASSIDY: For the sake of the argument, accepting all of that, nevertheless if somebody passes on false information that proves to be wrong, surely the aggrieved party is owed an apology. That is just a basic community standard.

JOHN HOWARD: I've said on Friday that I regret the information.

BARRIE CASSIDY: But I've given you a opportunity to apologise directly to the boatpeople and you haven't done it.

JOHN HOWARD: Barry, I know what you are asking me to do, and I've given you a response. <snip>

BARRIE CASSIDY: But no apology?

JOHN HOWARD: We are having an argument about a regret versus an apology.

At least he is consistent.

Yeah right -

BARRIE CASSIDY: As I understand it, Peter Reith has preliminary advice at least that he can claim immunity from the Crown, but do you think he should, given the national interest.

JOHN HOWARD: That is a matter for him. Peter Reith is now a private citizen. He is in a different position from me. I'm not going to give gratuitous advice as to what he should do. That is a matter for him to decide.

An excerpt from a transcript of an interview with the Prime Minister.

More refugee riots - this time in Britain. 6:42:54 AM    Comments ()

Airline clubs - I am a member of Ansett's Golden Wing Club, and for that matter a member of the Qantas Club. I have been a member of the latter of fifteen years or so and more recently joined the former when I began to flay infrequently with Hazelton Airlines to visit with my wife's family who live in Casino.

I have always disliked Ansett. Maybe it was their cocky attitude, or maybe it was their old planes - or more likely the snobbery shown by frequent Ansett passengers who thought that the main competitor airline, Qantas, was a stuffy old bureaucratic beast.

Whatever the reason I found myself in the Ansett lounges from time to time. They were pretty bad. That is until they finished refurbishing them a year or so prior to going bust. They seemed ok, but lacked the bustle of the busy Qantas lounges. Seems to me that Qantas carried the bulk of Australia's business travel and Ansett was the domain of "old money" - which has always been small in Australia.

I notice with interest that the potential new owners of Ansett are offering to "restore all memberships" and offer an "an additional complimentary six-month membership extension beyond members' current expiry date"

Michael Wilton, 45, from Glebe, a Golden Wing member for eight years, said under no circumstances would he return to the club after losing his Global Reward points last year.

"I'll believe this when I see it. I can understand that [Tesna] is excited about the prospect of owning its own airline, but what about all the people that got burnt when Ansett went under?

"Does Tesna really think that it can make up for all of the inconvenience so many people went through? Maybe it should just concentrate on getting the planes back in the air before it worries about what kind of coffee it is going to serve in the lounges."

IMHO you'll need to do more than that to lure back some custom.

I didn't know - that Patrick Dodson, the Aboriginal activist, was a Catholic Priest. 6:29:41 AM    Comments ()

And to deflect some of the heat - one finds a scapegoat. If a scapegoat cannot be found then one finds an example that supports our previous story. 6:28:00 AM    Comments ()

More lies - The Government last night was forced into another embarrassing correction over the children overboard affair, admitting the two misleading photographs released by the former Defence Minister, Peter Reith, were not the only ones received by his office [SMH].

This just gets deeper and deeper into the mud doesn't it.

Some advise for a Prime Minister on the slippery slope: in my career I have been responsible for the marketing of numerous product lines, and even if you'd only just passed Public Relations 101 you would know that you should release every bit of information you have available. Don't allow it to trickle out for the next three months. Release the information, tell the truth, kill the story and pay the consequences.
