c|net, 10/3/02:  Microsoft to detail new Exchange, Outlook

Microsoft next week plans to disclose more details of a forthcoming update to its Exchange Server communications software, including new features for the Outlook e-mail program.

Paul Flessner, a Microsoft senior vice president, will provide a detailed product road map for all of the company's server software when he speaks Tuesday at the Microsoft Exchange Conference in Anaheim, Calif. His talk will focus on how Microsoft's next version of Windows--called Windows.Net Server 2003--is designed to help save businesses money when combined with the company's other software, a Microsoft representative said.

THE PROOF OF the pudding is in the eating, goes the old adage: a piece of folk wisdom that Microsoft's chief executive officer, Steve Ballmer, hopes the company can apply to software development.

Ballmer, who worked for a cake mix distributor before joining Microsoft, wrote customers Tuesday to tell them how the company is using new error-reporting technology to improve the feedback it gets about the customer experience.

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 2 — Microsoft today released data about its Watson online error-reporting service, which the company says has had a significant impact on increasing the stability of its software.

InternetNews.Com, 10/3/02:  Information Theft Reaches Estimated $59 Billion

U.S. corporations lost $59 billion in proprietary information and intellectual property during the past year, according to a report released by the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS), PricewaterhouseCoopers and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

But what the report's authors and other security experts find most alarming (though not surprising) is the fact only a little more than 13 percent of Fortune 1,000 companies even responded to the survey conducted earlier this year. Of those 139 who did respond, only 40 percent of them reported an incidence of known or suspected information theft.

InternetNews.Com, 10/3/02:  Two New Epidemics Wreck Havoc On PCs

Two new epidemics, 'Opasoft' and 'Tanatos', have been discovered this week. The first report was received on Monday and it came from Russia, "but this does not mean that the viruses originated from Russia," said Denis Zenkin, Head of Corporate Communications of Kaspersky Labs.

As investigations are on-going to find out where the viruses could have come from, the number of infected PCs by both viruses is on the rise.
