Gartner, 10/3/02:  Provisioning IT Services

Provisioning is widely practiced in the telecommunications industry, but it’s being more widely adopted by enterprises as a way to save money and be more efficient and competitive.  With IT applications becoming more entwined with critical business processes, there are growing demands from business managers for more-predictable, reliable and cost-effective IT services. In many cases, the demands have outstripped the resources and abilities of IS organizations.

Improving process maturity within IS organizations is needed to help them operate more like commercial service providers, which is what best-in-class enterprises are already doing. To operate more effectively, enterprises need to attack process improvement earlier in the IT service life cycle, when services are created. The result is service provisioning.

Gartner, 9/30/02: Terrorists Could Hijack the Internet

A war game sponsored by Gartner and the U.S. Naval War College indicated that security best practices could mitigate 90 percent of the damage if terrorists hijack the Internet to launch cyber attacks.

Microsoft

cnet, 10/8/02:  Microsoft polishing .Net Server software

Microsoft is putting the finishing touches on the second release candidate, or near-final testing version, of Windows .Net Server 2003, sources said.

The clock is ticking for Windows .Net Server 2003, an operating system that is used to run high-end computers that manage everything from checking passwords to keeping track of a corporate payroll. The new system is also the foundation of Microsoft's .Net Web services initiative, geared to power advanced Internet operations.
