Internetnews.com, 10/29/02: Federal Workers Closing IT Skills Gap
Government IT workers seem to be closing the historic skills gap with the private sector, according to a recent analysis of more than 11,000 online skill assessments. The Brainbench report, called Closing the Gap: Government and Private Sector IT Skills, is the first of an ongoing series of reports designed to measure the relative IT skill levels of government and private sector IT services workers.
The Brainbench report, which compared the scores of 4,110 government and 7,096 private sector online test takers drawn from the Chantilly, Va.-based company's database of more than 5 million online tests, shows that government IT workers outscore their private sector counterparts in such key technology disciplines as Unix, Linux and Microsoft technologies. Private sector IT services workers outscore government workers in five other technology arenas, including networking, databases and Internet technologies.

THE NEXT RELEASE of Microsoft's Office productivity software will only work on Windows XP and on Windows 2000 operating systems that have Service Pack 3 installed, the company said Tuesday, citing security and compatibility issues with older systems.
