Infoworld, 10/22/02: HP, Nokia team up on remote asset management

NOKIA AND HEWLETT-PACKARD have joined forces to create a product package for remote asset management over wireless links, the companies said Tuesday.
The package combines the Nokia M2M Platform, a machine-to-machine connectivity product, and HP's OpenView management software on an HP-UX or HP ProLiant server, the companies said in a joint statement.

Business still have cold feet when it comes to inking broad IT consulting contracts. IBM's revenue from its Global Services operations grew a meager 2% year over year to $8.9 billion in the third quarter. Customers postponed 11 prospective deals worth at least $250 million each during the period, including one that was valued at more than $1 billion. Consulting contracts have become the subject of "increased internal review and analysis" by cash-conscious customers, making deals harder to seal, CFO John Joyce says.

ZDNet, 10/22/02: MS Office 11--risky business?

Microsoft this week plans to deliver the first test release of a new version of its Office software intended to rejuvenate sales and stave off competitors.
The new version of Microsoft's cash cow--code-named Office 11--comes as sales of the desktop software have begun to plateau, said analysts. While Office still controls more than 90 percent of the desktop office market, customers say they see fewer new features that would compel them to upgrade to the latest versions. Although a new licensing plan will help keep customers in the Microsoft fold, any slump in sales could make a big impact on the software maker's balance sheet. Office contributes nearly one-third of Microsoft's overall revenue.
