Command-H is a system wide keystroke to hide the frontmost app in OS X. But what I never want to do that. I want to "Hide others" and I wished that OS X had a keystroke for that instead. It turns out that LaunchBar can do that job for you. You need to enable it in the prefs but then you can use shift-command-H to hide others. Great!

Montreal's icy storm: The discordant notes had been building for some time before maestro Charles Dutoit's abrupt resignation this week: "The mood is certainly ripe for a split between those musicians who support Subirana's media tactics and those who feel the Guild is as much to blame for the caustic atmosphere clouding the OSM's future. "But, you know, we're musicians, so you go to nominating meetings and hardly anyone wants to volunteer, and then you end up with what you end up with.""

One detects seething resentment of the guild's handling of the situation. This is a good article. Read this one and Kaptanis's for a good sense of what's happening.

The baton of blame - Many share responsibility for discord at the MSO, Arthur Kaptainis, Montreal Gazette, 4/13/2002 [La Scena Musicale - News]'Perhaps this tragedy will have a fairy-tale ending. But it is more likely that Montreal, in a season or two, will have a fair-to-middling music director, and an orchestra to match. It will be exactly the combination that everybody deserves.'
Kaptanis documents some of the major bungling that went into this disaster. He also points out (as I did) the pathetic response of the orchestra's administration to remedy the situation.

Getting Starry-Eyed Over Digital. The race is on to install digital projection systems for proper showings of movies such as the new Star Wars installment. But where's the money coming from to pay for it? Michael Stroud reports from the National Association of Broadcasters convention in Las Vegas. [Wired News]
Interesting. This relates directly to our "Toronto AES" day-long meeting coming up in May.

Wired: "The company spent no money on marketing and received no media coverage, but like the best technology often does these days, the site found its way onto various weblogs and discussion sites, and 'we got slammed with traffic,' Diamond said." For what it's worth, Scripting News is media. This is where the Oddpost story broke [Scripting News]
Yes, it's media. That doesn't mean you're a journalist. Fortunately we know what we're getting when we come to Scripting News. An opionated editorialist who covers his areas of specialty and interst well. That's a good thing.

"Are Bloggers Journalists? - On the rise of Amateur Journalism and the need for a Blogging Code of Ethics - Microcontent News, a Corante.com Microblog" [Daypop Top 40]
I think it's pretentious for webloggers to think of themselves as journalists. It doesn't mean that you don't have something to offer. But just because you give me the tools to do something, it doesn't make me as qualified as someone who does the work professionally.

Dutoit Asked to Rethink His Abrupt Resignation. The executive board of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra has asked Charles Dutoit, its music director for 25 years, to reconsider his sudden resignation on Wednesday. By Lawrence Van Gelder. [New York Times: Arts]' The orchestra's executive committee, which expressed disappointment at Mr. Dutoit's resignation, asked him on Thursday to postpone his decision and to finish this season and next to ensure what it called "a harmonious transition."'
This is completely the wrong approach. All that does is buy the orchestra management some time to get a new conductor. Dutoit should help management out of their short-term problem?. Rather selfish and not something Dutoit wouldn't see through. I would think that way everyone really wants is to have Dutoit back permanently. Perhaps there's more to the comments than what NYT quotes here.

Renegade View on Child Sex Causes a Storm. When the University of Minnesota Press agreed to publish a book called "Harmful to Minors: The Perils of Protecting Children From Sex," it was clear that it would be controversial. By Robert F. Worth. [New York Times: Arts]'What Ms. Levine does argue is that the fear of pedophilia is overblown and that the age of consent should be lowered in certain circumstances. Ms. Levine tries to separate what she sees as real risks [~] H.I.V. infection, unwanted pregnancies and sexual violence [~] from risks she calls exaggerated or even invented. She argues forcefully against abstinence-only education and what she sees as a pervasive tendency to view all manifestations of childhood sexuality as dangerous or disturbing.'

Thestar.com/Montreal's loss won't be the TSO's gain: "He doesn't need Canada nearly as much as Canada needs him.

Frankly, there isn't another conductor of his international stature working in this country. His prestige was instrumental in securing a multi-million dollar financial bailout for the Montreal Symphony Orchestra a few years ago and his aggressive lobbying played a major role in securing the orchestra the promise of a new concert hall."
