Updated to 10.1.4 this afternoon. Got home with my Pismo, woke the machine from sleep, changed location to my dial up connection, switched to Eudora, started to dial in. The machine froze up solid. Let's hope it was just a fluke.

To people who wonder about the revenue model for the Google API, here's a clue. "When Google arrives on the desktop, it will have the same SOAP interface that the global Google has. All the tools that work with the centralized service will also work on the desktop." [Scripting News] Dave's right about Google on the desktop. I would pay for this. And I'd be happy to help finance a company that has helped me so much . . . by building such a great search engine. As a Mac person I thought Sherlock could do this. It comes close on earlier versions of the OS but is entirely useless on OS X.

Wireless just keeps getting cheaper
The Dealmac Web site points to a deal from Outpost.com selling an SMC EZ Connect 11Mbps Wireless Access Point for less than $100. Pair that with the AirPort cards that can be found here and there for around $50 and the cost of entry into wireless computing on the Mac is really quite low. [Macintosh News]Those are US dollars but it's getting pretty tantilizing.

It's the Worldwide Blog. The personal homepages in the long-ago days of yore have evolved into sophisticated weblogs that, some say, will transform the world of journalism. By Andrew Sullivan of Wired magazine. [Wired News]A great article to get you all excited about the potential (and to some degree currently reality) of weblogs. I agree with a lot of what he says and share his enthusiasm. I do have two comments. Sullivan nots that in bypassing the editor and publisher the writer has more freedom and implies that s/he won't be catering tso much to the audience. Hmmm. You don't look at your referrer logs to see what's attracting the hits or where those hits are coming from? And you don't adjust what you do in reaction to that? I'm not dimissing what he's saying just circling this little point for more thought. My other comment is just a pet peeve. I shut down as soon as a writer pulls out the 'Think about it' phrase. I haven't decided if this is just lazy writing or if it's insulting to the reader. But I don't like it.

Apple Presses The Emotional Buttons. "I like it — I want it — what is it?" (The Times via MyAppleMenu) [Macintosh News]Instead of appealing to the rational, left-brain decision process that most computer companies think drive purchase decisions, they appealed to the [base "]pre-cognitive decision process[per thou] ([base "] I like it [~] I want it [~] what is it?[per thou]). The results have been extraordinary from both a business and a branding point of view.'

Is Apple's QuickTime King Of The Digital Media Hill?. According to analysts, the key to the success of any streaming media format is the support of third-party developers. (NewsFactor via MyAppleMenu) [Macintosh News]It certainly is the sexiest solution and the one with the most capability. But it's not a fair game when you're playing with a monopolist.

iBlog: Running Radio on the iPod
Today I moved Radio UserLand folder to my iPod. Since moving Radio is usually painful, I renamed my iPod disk with the same name of my PowerBook HD. Everything works as expected, I'm posting this message from my G4, running Radio from my iPod.
This also means that I can walk to any Mac, plug in my iPod and start blogging in seconds.
[Paolo Valdemarin: Paolo's Weblog] Too cool. It's getting easier and easier to rationalize an iPod! Oh dear.

Paolo Valdemarin Public Weblog: "I've been using google as a spell checker for a while. If I'm not sure of the proper speling of a word I run a search with google and most of the time google will reply with "Did you mean: spelling."Based on the work Paolo has done developing products for Radio, and the few times I've read his blog, I think the guy is brilliant. Someone I should pay more attention to. Think I'll subscribe to his feed.
BTW, I don't mean because he thought to use "Google" as a spell checker, but because of how he thought this idea through to something beyond. Give his article a read.

"Bush Officials Met With Venezuelans Who Ousted Leader" [Daypop Top 40] 'The disclosures come as rights advocates, Latin American diplomats and others accuse the administration of having turned a blind eye to coup plotting activities, or even encouraged the people who temporarily removed Mr. Chávez. Such actions would place the United States at odds with its fellow members of the Organization of American States, whose charter condemns the overthrow of democratically elected governments.'
