W.E.B. Griffin was a new Corps book out. The author’s original goal was to cover a fictional history of the US Marine Corps from World War 2 to the present day. Since the first book came out in 1988 and this current volume only reaches the Korean War (jumping from the previous book’s 1943 setting), history is advancing faster than the author can write about it.
Notice that in his various series – The Brotherhood of War, The Corps, Men In Blue, OSS Agents, Honor Series, there is always a rich playboy who joins the military/police/intelligence agency for reasons nobody else can understand.

The Jerusalem Post reports that Elie Hobeika the former Lebanese warlord, cabinet minister, and Parliament member considered responsible for the 1982 Sabra and Shatilla massacre in Beirut, Lebanon was assassinated yesterday by a car bomb. A previously unknown group, "Lebanese for a Free and Independent Lebanon," claimed responsibility, saying the killing was to protest Syrian meddling in Lebanese affairs.
While he was associated with Israel during the 1982 invasion some reports suggest he was a Syrian double agent at the time.
