ZD Net reports that Intel is planning to merge its desktop and notebook CPU lines in 2007 with the Pentium M line of notebook chips providing the basis of the merged chip line. The Pentium M line – designed in Israel uses much less power than the desktop Petium IV line while running at a competive speed. The new line code named Merom will be given a number following Intel’s new numbering scheme. Starting in May the scheme will be:

  • 300 class – budget CPU line
  • 500 class - desktops
  • 700 class – notebooks
  • 900 class – enthusiast class

This numbering scheme will hide the shift from processors running at high rates to more efficient processors.

Movie City News hosts a press release from The Coalition of Independent Filmmakers, IFP/Los Angeles, IFP/New York, and the Motion Picture Association of America Inc. (MPAA) detailing a settlement between the groups concerning the MPAA’s failed attempt at a ban on movie awards screeners. The MPAA claims that screeners, which are promo DVDs or tapes given to critics or award voters often get copied and are a leading source of pirated material on the Internet. The Independent Filmmakers claim the ban adversely affects the changes of less known movies from being seen by critics and people who vote for awards and as a result hurts them critically and financially.

No details have been given on the nature of the agreement.
