News -- A new object was found in our solar system. About half the size of
Pluto, it's the largest object found since Pluto was discovered:

Comment - This is pretty exciting. But I hate the preliminary name it has
been given: "Quaoar". What's up with that? You can't even pronounce it!
Interesting to note that it was found by a ground-based telescope, not
Hubble. The problem with Hubble is that there is so much to see but only so
much time available for Hubble to look at things.
News - Study says Michigan ranks 20th as smartest state:
http://www.morganquitno.com/edpress.htm
Comment - I think the purpose of the study is get more money to public
schools and teachers, because it says "Factors considered include per pupil
expenditures, public high school graduation rates, average class size, the
percent of staff who are school district administrators, student reading and
math proficiency, pupil-teacher ratios and teacher salaries."
I have no problem paying top dollar for the best teachers, but that means
really having a system where the most money goes to the teachers who are the
most skilled, not the teachers who just have the most seniority.
News - Washington Post headline says 8th grader who was wounded was a
"wonderful, sweet teen":
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A57264-2002Oct7.html
Comment - Well, of course he was. When was the last time you saw a headline
that said "Worthless Thug of a Teen Gunned Down; Neighbors Grateful".
