News - Tired of GI Joe dolls? Check out Construction Jack:
http://www.constructionjack.com/
Comment - Soon to be offered in a special Village People
(http://www.villagepeople-official.com/
) gift set that includes an Indian,
GI, cop, cowboy and biker (I'm just kidding).
News - Slashdot is run by three guys in Ann Arbor area:
http://www.nytimes.com/2002/10/14/technology/14SLAS.html?todaysheadlines
Comment - Slashdot is a super computer geek blog. I think it's neat that
it's based in Michigan.
News - New York Times tries to make some money off their online articles:
http://www.nytimes.com/timestopics/mysteries_universe.html
Comment - The price is not bad. I've already read some of these Mysteries of
the Universe columns, but if I had not, I'd be tempted to buy this
collection. You can download them and read on your computer.
Sky and Telescope magazine has a similar system, where you can buy copies of
articles from back issues.

News -- Flat transparent speakers are a big technical breakthrough. The
speaker in a TV set could be the screen itself. And, car speakers could be
spread across the inside of the roof: http://makeashorterlink.com/?Q3E621A12
Comment: It's almost science fiction come to life. No more big bulky
speakers on the walls or floor.
News - Interesting article in Detroit Free Press says U.S. botched the Tora
Bora attacks on al Qaeda: http://www.freep.com/news/nw/cave14_20021014.htm
Comment - Highlights: most of al Qaeda escaped into Pakistan (that's not
really news), our Afgahn "allies" did little fighting, U.S. goofed by
refusing to commit our Marines to block the exit routes. One interesting
finding is that there is no Tora Bora "cave complex" as widely reported in
the media.
Looks like we dispersed but did not destroy al Qaeda. At least we eliminated
Afghanistan as a safe base for them.
Lessons? I'm not sure any apply to the upcoming attack on Iraq, unless it's
the hazards of relying too much on native troops. But that does not seem to
be much of the plan in Iraq, anyway.
