News - I've added photos to my blog! I'm using a service called Bravenet to create picture albums on the Web that I can link to my blog. The first photo I've posted in a shot I took at the 2002 Festival of Trees last week in Lansing. It's a photo of an M&M theme Christmas tree. To see the picture, go here and click on "Blog": http://makeashorterlink.com/?X16F257A2

In the future I'll use this service to post other pictures from our trips, events, etc. Let me know what you think.

News - Thanks to a heads-up from Jane, last night I got to see the very unusual sight of the International Space Station and the Shuttle flying across the northern sky at 6:10 p.m.: http://www.space.com/spacewatch/shuttle_spotting_021202.html

Comment - It was pretty neat. The ISS was brighter and followed behind the Shuttle at a distance of about four hand-widths. The two were 255 miles up and traveling 18,000 miles and hour. It took them 3-4 minutes to cross from the southwest to the northeast.

News - More astronomy news: Wednesday morning at dawn, I saw extremely bright Venus in the eastern sky, with dimmer Mars close by (also a very pretty sunrise): http://www.space.com/spacewatch/venus_morning_021122.html

Comment - I've never seen Venus so bright ("During the winter holidays it will shine like a modern-day 'Christmas star in the east' before sunrise. It reaches its greatest brilliancy for this morning apparition on Dec. 6 at magnitude -4.7. This is as bright as it can ever appear and brighter than any other planet or star."). This article says Venus is so bright, you can check against the snow and see if the Venus-light is casting shadows.

News - I can't believe it! It was 18 below zero Tuesday morning in Lansing: http://www.lsj.com/news/local/021204_new_cold_1a-5a.html

Comment - When I heard the temperature on the radio, I thought they were talking about wind chill. And we're still two weeks away from the official start of Winter. But, a couple years ago, we had a cold and snowy December and then a warm January.
