News - Why pull any punches? Bush says U.S. could retaliate with nukes to an attack on America or our troops: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A36819-2002Dec10.html

Comment - I'm sure Bush will get criticized for being so blunt, but my reading of history tells me that many wars have started because the opponents misunderstood each other, or underestimated what would happen once war started. Example: England and France gave Hitler plenty of reasons to believe they were bluffing when they said an invasion of Poland would lead to war. But to Hitler's surprise, the invasion of Poland did bring a declaration of war from England and France, which according to some historians meant Germany had to fight at least a year or two earlier than it wanted. Hitler could have use the extra time to build up more stockpiles of weapons.

News - Gateway announces it will use the idle processing time of computers in its stores: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A32701-2002Dec9.html

Comment - Neat public relations gimmick. The idea is that most computers sit around most of the day with their processors idling. Gateway will package this idle time and sell it to researchers who need lots of computing power for stuff like designing medicines.

News -- Visual thesaurus is a neat tool: http://www.visualthesaurus.com/

Comment - I'm interested in alternate methods of conveying information on a computer screen. Too often, what we see on Web sites looks like a printed piece, only it's onscreen and has hyperlinks.

Check our Visual thesaurus for a different way of educating and communicating that harnesses some of the unique power of a computer display.
