QUOTE OF THE DAY
"Ever since the atom bomb was split, the whole world has changed, except for one thing; the way we think. Unless we think anew, we're in the soup."
- - Albert Einstein (as recalled by Studs Terkel 8/19/02)
RHINO HERE: Last night I had a religious experience. No, psychedelics were not involved. I simply watched Phil Donahue interview Studs Terkel. At 90 years old, a survivor of a quintuple heart bypass when he was 84, Studs is sharp as a tack and as stubborn a left leaning subversive as any I know. With Donahue's tongue-in-cheek devil's advocate, Studs characterized Shrub as a "wanton boy, a Shakespearian quote from King Lear about a mindless boy swatting flies" and Ashcroft as "being born 300 years too late", "Arthur Miller described him in The Crucible; the guy who forced everyone to spy on one another".

Studs spoke of the teapot dome scandal in the 20's as a drop in the bucket next to the current wave of corporate scandal, and yet back then, many government officials were indicted and some did time. He characterized the democratic leadership as spineless for not being in a state of outrage over Shrub & Cheney and their corporate cohorts' unscrupulous dealings.

Inspired by Studs' 90 year old nothin-to-lose attitude, Rhino asks, Where is the democratic leadership on this? For that matter, where was the democratic leadership when Jeb Bush and the other savings and loan execs stole so many working peoples retirement accounts in the 80's? Do the democrats really care about the average citizens and their hopes for their futures? NOT. It seems obvious all they care about is hustling campaign contributions for re-election. After feeling so good about witnessing Studs' spirit, I'm sickened by the prospect of having to pull democratic toggle switches in the voting booth. Studs says he hopes Congressman Dennis Kucinich will run for president in 2004. Now him I'd feel good about voting for.
