Your Regularly Scheduled Prolific Output Will Resume Tomorrow

Hi all!  Sorry to up and disappear but after YATCHD (yet another thinkpad crappy hard drive), I just couldn't deal with recovering my .root file from the disc.  And I just plain didn't expect that my backup solution had worked (surprise, surprise -- I lost maybe 1 blog entry with a .ROOT file from a few hours before the rather interesting crash).  It's really, really cool when things that you just hack out using a shareware product work like a charm.  www.secondcopy.com recommended.

NOTE: Sign of a demo god -- they do not panic, do not break a sweat, do not even swear or look frazzled when they walk into a meeting, turn on the thinkpad, see that it starts up, get a cup of coffee and come back to the machine being OFF and then this happens:  Hm...  That's strange.  Did it go into sleep mode in the 1 minute, 47 seconds I was away?   Turn it on again and "Machine Cannot Boot" message is displayed.  This wouldn't have been so bad except for:

  • It was a user interface design review meeting
  • Everything was on the web also but there was no Internet access

That was how my Thursday morning began.  And, guess what?  The client was perfectly ok by the end of the meeting.  I'll write up some guidelines for demoing shortly.

And then, after that, I had to get ready for an out of state sales call, learn a bunch of new things so I just couldn't get back to blogging.  But I'm here now and I will hopefully be back in form tomorrow.

Business 101: Making the Virtual Real

You may have noticed that my blog output has been a little slow recently.  I've been dealing with making my consulting practice much more real.  Here's some of the steps I have taken:

  1. Teamed up with a partner.  Although we've been working together for a while, it's really come together in the past 2 weeks.
  2. Made the partnership solid and one that I think will not only work but work *very* well.
  3. Incorporated.
  4. Set up a business banking account.
  5. Setup a real address.
  6. Setup a voice mail system.
  7. Got business cards.

All of this has been hugely time consuming -- hence the relative lack of blog entries -- but also very rewarding.  We both feel much better about the future.  In this essay I'm going to talk about #s 3-7.  Since there are so many of us working as consultants from home these days, I thought an essay about this was worth while.  Each of these topics are short -- but I think quite useful.
