Consulting 101: Mistakes People Make With Business Partners
NOTE: I've seen so many business fail over the years because of problems between the partners or founders that it amazes me. Making a partnership work isn't really all that hard but everyone seems to make the same mistakes over and over again. Hopefully this will help. I classified this as Consulting 101 / Marketing / Business 101 because it applies to all of these.
Depending on how you count them, I've had six or seven different business partners over the years. Some have worked, some have not but I've been lucky enough to learn from all of them. Of the partners that I've had, my current partner, Gretchen, is the best of the lot -- but that's because we really worked at it (and it doesn't hurt that she's really, really cool). The rest of this essay describes common mistakes people make with business partners and how to avoid them. It also gives examples of whether or not I do this myself for each of the mistakes.
Disclaimers: IANAL / IANAA / IAJP (I am not a lawyer / I am not an accountant / I am just practical). Free advice is worth what you pay for it. The advice of a good attorney and accountant for your business is always good.
