Marketing 101 : 8 Ways O'Reilly Could Make More Money from Safari

Since I'm just easing my way back into these Marketing 101 pieces, here's an easy one -- how (well at least I think) O'Reilly could make more money from Safari. Here's a little bit of background for those who don't know about O'Reilly and Safari.

Marketing 101: Great Customer Service is Great Marketing

There is a growing trend in American business, if not worldwide business, to treat customer service as the poor step child, the ugly sibling that no one wants to acknowledge.  Witness the huge number of companies with those awful dial by number systems that claim to give better customer service  but we all know just cut a company's costs.  Just think about it -- when was the last time that a real live person answered the phone at a business of more than 50 people? I strongly doubt that companies understand just how poor the service provided by these automated systems is and how much it alienates customers.

While most company's today seem to give customer service as a drawback, something they'd rather not do at all, smart companies know that great customer service is a fantastic marketing tool.  Here are two case studies, one of a big multinational company and one of a little tiny outlet for a national chain.

OSCON: "Hey Honey .... I'm Home!"

Well, I'm back ...   And my alarm clock has all too angrily screeched "Time to rejoin the blogosphere.  Get Up!  Get Up!".  Ack Foo.  I'm here.  After an all too surprising trip home which included meeting Miguel of Ximian fame (a very nice guy) and an amazing landing in Boston that included descending thru a giant lightning storm.  And then the (logical) discovery that when you don't have your keys since your car is at your partner's house that you need to break into your own house.  Which you do only to find that your cats are infinitely amused by Daddy coming in thru the window near their basket.  Ah being a road warrior, I love thee not.

Seriously I should have a a few Marketing 101 pieces which I did on the plane last night.  It is nice to be home.
