The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea

Why Microsoft's Palladium project threatens to send Linux and open-source into exile.
By Jon Lasser Jul 17, 2002

While open-source software's reputation for security has taken a hit lately, Microsoft's Palladium presents itself as an opportunity to improve security by eliminating entire classes of potential exploits. However, Palladium cannot protect us from most security threats -- and its aim may be to eliminate open source software on commodity hardware.  More...

Announcing Evectors North America!

Gorizia, Italy / Belmont, MA. - July 18, 2002 - Taking a large step forward, Evectors Srl, a leading Italian software company, announced the formal opening of their new North American division, Evectors North America. Evectors, established in 1992, is an Italian software and services company that specializes in web content management software and application development services. With the formal launch of a new North American division, Evectors will now be able to offer their award winning IdeaTools product to a much larger audience.

Evectors IdeaTools: a Scalable Content Management Solution

Evectors, originally a multimedia and website development firm, evolved into a software business after recognizing the recurring nature of their customers content management needs.   The Evectors IdeaTools content management platform is a robust, scalable content management solution, now in version 2.5, and is currently used to manage over 160 web sites.  The wide range of IdeaTools customers includes Pharmacia, the largest pharmaceutical company in the world and Active-Software an independent Italian eCommerce site that sells software over the Internet.  Key product features include:

  • Complete operation and functionality using a web browser from any desktop in the world - no complicated software to install and no need for obscure scripting languages
  • Support for integrated intranet / extranet sites using one product, one content database and one security architecture
  • Powerful. Interactive discussion groups
  • Full support for cutting edge web features such as XSLT, RSS and XML
  • An underlying object database that manages all content
  • A powerful theme system that allows complete site level redesigns just by change and XML style sheet file (XSL)
  • Content Versioning Support
  • Integral News Aggregator

Expansion: Even in Bad Economic Times

Given the current economic climate, most companies are focusing on cost cutting not expansion.  When asked about this, Paolo Valdemerin, the founder and CEO of Evectors commented:

It's certainly true that the current economy isn’t what would traditionally be deemed expansion friendly but the reality is that our product offers compelling cost effective advantages -- even in bad times this expansion makes sense.  The powerful templating and site creation features of our IdeaTools product can help companies create and manage their web sites more efficiently -- in a fraction of the time for a fraction of the cost.

My Baggage Redux

Well still no baggage.  I had yet another phone call with British Air (BA) and my luggage seems to have gone from Venice to Manchester England to JFK via British Air while I went from Venice to Amsterdam to Detroit to Boston via Northwest.  But I have to give British Air this -- Northwest has never called me back on my missing luggage to say "We're still looking for it" -- they're FANTASTIC.  BA has been calling me ever since they found it and we just keep missing each other (it's the phone tag game).  So I'd like to say "Thank you Nicole from British Air Baggage Services for being persistent and getting me my bag."  My next trip to London will, without question, be on British Air.

Supposedly I'll have my bag tomorrow via fedex.  I'll let you know.
