The Clifford Chance controversy - Is it about mistreated associates who are pressed to meet oppressive billable requirements, or is it the Stockholm syndrome? Dahlia Lithwick nails it. Oh, the irony!

Spam suit settled - Verizon has settled their lawsuit against a notorious spammer, which is good for their customers. Supposedly. But a cockroach can enter your home in several ways. And so it is with spam. I've taken to block-deleting emails in the morning. Before I purge I scan and undelete those that appear legitimate, and hope that I'm not missing any. It's a mini tragedy of the commons, you know. There is only so much viewing space in my inbox, and I only have so much time.

Smart Mobs - I'm reading Howard Rheingold's fantastic book Smart Mobs, which I knew would be good based on hearing him speak at PopTech. One important theme: an always-on, pervasive connection to the Internet will change things in ways we can't really imagine. Cell-phones and text-messaging are one example, but what the final tools will look like is also hard to imagine. The phrase "smart mobs" refers to the fact that people are organizing themselves (using their new pervasive connectivity) in astonishing ways. For example, hostages in airplanes and in Russian theatres can communicate with authorities. Or authorities can disseminate information that is spread a lightning speed. We are just seeing the beginning of this important trend. I highly recommend Howard's book.

Wireless in airports? Yes, please - T-Mobile is adding hot spots in Delta and United airport clubs, and has service in some Admiral's Club (American Airlines) clubs [via Alan Reiter] and [80211b News]
I am now at the point where I can't live without Wi-Fi. I make reservations at hotels that have Wi-Fi if I can. High-speed Internet access is critical, but --combined with wireless-- it is the way, the truth and the light.
